Or perhaps you have been forced out, cut down, liquidated, sold off, downsized, “retired,” un-hired, dismissed or furloughed? You have been Yudoffed! <br /><br />As the University of California staff, students, and faculty were participating in a walk-out on September 24, the President of the University of California Marc Yudof told Deborah Solomon of the New York Times that “the shine is off of it [education]. It's really a question of being crowded out by other priorities.” (<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/27/magazine/27fob-q4-t.html">http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/27/magazine/27fob-q4-t.html</a>)<br /><br />With the help of what seemed like an endless flow of appalling statements, Marc Yudof clearly and purposefully conveyed that he does not care about public education. With public education under the assault of the market, we cannot afford to have such a President. However, while ousting Yudof would be a welcome step in the right direction, his statements are unfortunately not the product of one person's warped sense of the place of public education but represent a generalized perception that, with education as with everything else, the will of the market (led by its drive to maximize profits) should determine the purpose and value of education. <br /><br />Will public education survive the drive for profits? That depends on us. Don't let Marc Yudof and others like him be the last word. See your dean, email your chancellor, contact your local or state government official! Find out about Proposition 13 and tell your family and friends! Fill out one of the postcards floating around on campus, send it and make your voice heard. Write emails to make your voice and vote count. Put the shine back on education and act up! <br /><br />Below are addresses of UC Regents, Chancellors, and state officials. Let them know that you are outraged and that you demand a reaction and action. In case you need further information about the plight of the UC system, we recommend thinking and making your voice heard about the following issues and looking at the following links:<br /><br />- No furloughs, salary cuts, or job cuts for those making below $40,000.<br />- No further fee increases. Fee increases are contradictory to the UC’s dedication to accessibility and to the quality of public education.<br />- Full disclosure of the UC budget and transparency in decision making. A public university needs a public budget.<br />- Democratize the Regents: governance and democratic processes should be instituted and respected.<br />- Layoff Marc Yudof. The university needs a leader who prioritizes education, not one that got into education “by accident” and “thought I’d go work for a law firm.”<br />- Advocate alternative budget cuts and revenue generation mechanisms. Specifically, repeal or overhaul Proposition 13.
